WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Sept. 6, 2014) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo volleyball team closed out play at the Midwestern State-Hampton Inn-vitational on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs, 3-1.
The Pack even up their season record at 2-2, after collecting their second 3-1 victory of the day. The Bulldogs remain winless on the season, falling to 0-4.
The ThunderWolves held the advantage in hitting percentage (.172 to .107), digs (79-75) and blocks (9-5). Both squads registered 44 assists.
CSU-Pueblo's Mariangel Perez (So., Catia La Mar, Venezuela) finished off a strong tournament, collecting her fourth double-double in as many matches. The sophomore sent down a match-high 16 kills and added 14 digs. Jordan Bruere (Jr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) matched Perez with her fourth double-double (19 assists, 12 digs) of the season, while Alex Sansavera (R-Jr., San Antonio, Texas) added her second double-double (19 assists, 13 digs) of the year. Katie Burnett (So., Austin, Texas) and Morgan Wilkening (Jr., Fleming, Colo.) both tied Perez for the team high in digs with 14 each.
Brandy Mader registered a contest-best 37 assists for the Bulldogs. Kaila Lancaster led both squads with 26 digs, while Carly Zak finished with a team-high 14 kills.
The Pack carried the momentum over from their morning match against Arkansas Tech into the first set with the Bulldogs. CSU-Pueblo never trailed in the match and used a 9-3 run to open up a close contest and take the first set, 25-18.
Another 9-3 run by the ThunderWolves broke a 10-10 tie in the second set. Southwestern Oklahoma State fought its way back into the match, ripping off a 10-4 scoring spurt to even the set up at 23 apiece. Just like it did against Arkansas State, CSU-Pueblo finished off the set strong, getting back-to-back kills from Wilkening and Perez to earn the win and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Seeking a sweep, the Pack jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the third set. The Bulldogs came back to tie the match at 9-9. The remainder of the set was tight throughout with neither team leading by more than two points. With the set knotted at 18, Southwestern Oklahoma State outscored the ThunderWolves 7-5 to earn the 25-23 win and avoid the sweep.
In the clinching set, through the first 20 points the score was evened up at 10 apiece. From there it was all CSU-Pueblo, as the Pack outscored the Bulldogs, 15-6, to finish off the match.
For her efforts during the two-day tournament, Perez was named to the all-tournament squad. Through four matches, Perez posted a team-leading 58 kills, while adding 61 digs. The sophomore recorded double-doubles in all four contests, leading the Pack to a 2-2 record during the tournament.
The ThunderWolves will return to action on Tuesday evening for their 2014 home opener. CSU-Pueblo will host Colorado College at Massari Arena at 7:00 p.m.
