SPEARFISH, S.D. (September 26, 2014) ~ The Colorado State University-Pueblo volleyball team (8-6, 2-3 RMAC) halted its three-match losing skid in resounding fashion, rolling past Black Hills State University, 3-1 (25-18, 25-12, 22-25, 25-18), Friday at the Young Center.
The ThunderWolves pick up their first true road win of the season to improve to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tilts. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 4-9 on the season and 2-3 in league matches.
CSU-Pueblo recorded its top hitting percentage in its five RMAC contests, posting a .231 mark to the home team's .060 percentage. For the fifth consecutive match, the Pack out blocked their opponent. The ThunderWolves notched 11 blocks to Black Hills State's 10 stuffs. CSU-Pueblo led in kills, 54-43, assists, 48-42, and digs, 79-78.
Three players, Mariangel Perez (So., Catia La Mar, Venezuela), Jordan Bruere (Jr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Morgan Wilkening (Jr., Fleming, Colo.), posted double-doubles for the Pack. Perez tallied a match-high 17 kills to go along with 12 digs, while Bruere registered a team-high 25 assists and 15 digs. Wilkening finished the match with 10 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Megan Schultz (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) put away a career-high 11 kills, while hitting an outstanding .421. Schultz also added a match-high four blocks.
For Black Hills State, Holly Hamlin tallied a team-best 12 kills, while matching Schultz for the match-high in blocks with four. Brynn Eckhardt led both teams in assists with 29, while Lacy Stevens posted a contest-leading 25 digs.
In the opening set, the ThunderWolves never trailed en route to a 25-18 victory. Perez notched eight of her 17 kills in the set, helping the Pack hit .333 in the first stanza.
CSU-Pueblo extended its lead to 2-0 with one of its most dominating sets of the season. The ThunderWolves led by as many as 13 (23-10) and went on to claim a 25-12 win in set two. The Pack once again hit over .300, notching a .324 hitting percentage.
Black Hills State rebounded in set three, racing out to a 20-13 lead. CSU-Pueblo came charging back, closing the gap to one point, at 23-22. The Yellow Jackets held off the comeback attempt by the ThunderWolves, recording the final two points of the frame to earn a 25-22 win and pull within 2-1 in the match.
CSU-Pueblo put the finishing touches on its eighth victory of the season, rolling to a 25-18 set four win. Perez and Wilkening each tallied four kills to pace the visitors.
The Pack will look to make it two wins in a row when they travel to face Chadron State College tomorrow at 6 p.m.
