CANYON, Texas (September 5, 2015) ~ The Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball team concluded play at the BritKare Lady Buff Classic with a tough, five-set loss against Dallas Baptist University Saturday inside the WTAMU Fieldhouse.
The ThunderWolves' second, five-set loss in as many days drops their season record to 1-3 overall and 3-3 all-time against the Patriots. With the victory, Dallas Baptist ups their season mark to 3-1.
The contest was evenly matched in several statistical categories. Both teams recorded 54 kills, 50 assists and 13 total team blocks. The Pack held the advantage in digs, 66-55, while the Patriots owned the edge in hitting percentage, .187-.124.
Mariangel Perez (Jr., Catia La Mar, Venezuela) paced the ThunderWolves with 14 kills, while Caitlin Broadwell (So., Lawrence, Kan.) and Oni Lattin (Sr., Houston, Texas) both finished with double-digit kills as well with 11 apiece. Perez notched 12 digs to record her second double-double of the season. Alex Sansavera (R-Sr., San Antonio, Texas) recorded her first double-double of the year with 17 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Elena Michalski (So., Longmont, Colo.) topped the team with 25 assists.
The opening set was tightly contested for the majority of play. Midway through the stanza, the two squads were knotted at 12 apiece. A 10-5 scoring run helped the ThunderWolves seize control of the set en route to a 25-20 set-one victory.
CSU-Pueblo carried their strong play from the latter stages of the first set into the early action in the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Patriots rallied to even the score at 10-10. Both teams traded points back-and-forth as the score remained even, at 15-15. A 7-4 spurt by DBU gave it a 22-19 advantage. The Pack notched the next two points to pull within one, but the Patriots closed out the set with three straight kills to earn a 25-21 victory, evening the match at one set apiece.
In set three, the ThunderWolves led 9-7 early, only to see Dallas Baptist go on a 16-9 run to move in front 23-18. The Pack pulled to within 24-21 and then fended off three-straight set points to knot the contest at 24 all. The Patriots recorded the next point to go on top, 25-24, but CSU-Pueblo tallied the final three points of the set to win, 27-25, and to move in front two games to one.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, DBU broke open a 13-13 score in the fourth set with a 12-5 spurt to pick up a 25-18 win, forcing a fifth game. In the final set, the Patriots closed out the win with a 15-4 victory.
CSU-Pueblo returns home next weekend, playing host to the Steel & Silver Classic Sept. 11-12 at Massari Arena. The Pack open play at 2:00 p.m. Friday versus Texas Woman's University.
