Pack Volleyball stumbles in three set loss to Newman

DENTON, Texas (September 3, 2016) Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball struggled to find its groove against Newman University in their final game in the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament. The Pack fell to the Jets in three sets (18-25, 15-25, 21-25).

Senior Katie Burnett (Austin, Texas) anchored the Pack's defense with 12 digs. She also served up four aces and dished out four assists playing in her home state.
 
Offensively, seniors Mariangel Perez (Catia La Mar, Venezuela), Morgan Wilkening (Fleming, Colo.) and junior Caitlin Broadwell (Lawrence, Kan.) led the charge with seven kills each. Broadwell also finished with nine digs.
 
Junior Elena Michalski (Longmont, Colo.) passed out 14 helpers. Michalski also had five digs. Freshman Kelsey Bell (Los Lunas, N.M.) recorded 11 assists and four digs.
 
The Pack led the first set 8-6, but the Jets went on a 10-1 run to take a 16-9 lead. They would use this run to win set one 25-18.
 
In set two, the Jets started the set with a 10-2 run. The Pack could not claw back into the set that would end 25-15 in favor of Newman.
 
Newman scored the first nine points of the third set. The Pack would try to come back, but would only close within four, falling 25-21.
 
The ThunderWolves hit only .121 compared to a .225 hitting percentage for Newman. After their first weekend of competition, the Pack stands 1-3.

CSU-Pueblo will return to Massari Arena Wednesday night, Sept. 7, for their home opener against Angelo State University at 7:00 p.m. The Pack's matchup against Angelo State will begin a five-game homestand that will include four games during the ThunderWolves Classic Sept. 8-10.
