CANYON, Texas (Sept. 1, 2017) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball started their 2017 campaign on a high note by sweeping St. Mary's University (25-22,25-22, 25-21) in their opening match of the 2017 BritKare LadyBuff Classic.
The ThunderWolves outhit the Rattlers .218 to .130. Elena Michalski (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) facilitated the Pack's attack with 29 assists. Michalski narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs in the morning matchup.
Caitlin Broadwell (Sr., Lawrence, Kan.) spiked down 15 kills in the three sets, averaging 5.0 kills per set. Broadwell hit .343 in the victory. She also came up with five digs.
Middle blockers Misha McDowell (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz.) and Melissa Nichols (Jr., McKinney, Texas) each finished with six kills and two blocks. Both of McDowell's blocks were solo blocks. She also finished with a team-high three service aces. Nichols led the Pack with a .375 hitting percentage.
Neither team was able to build much of a lead in the first set as the two teams battled to a 20-20 tie. The Pack scored five of the last seven points to take the first set. Broadwell totaled seven kills in the opening stanza.
The ThunderWolves used a 7-0 run to take a 17-8 lead. The Rattlers would fight back within one at 23-22. However, CSU-Pueblo would pick up the last two points to head into the break up 2-0.
In the third set, the Pack came out on fire, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Once again, St. Mary's managed to claw back to a tie at 20-20. The ThunderWolves responded with a 5-1 run to close out the sweep.
