No.9 Regis rejects Pack’s upset bid

DENVER, Colo. (October 20, 2017) Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball stuck with No. 9 Regis University for a set, but could not pull off the upset against the Rangers Friday night. The Pack wound up on the wrong side of a three-set loss (23-25, 14-25, 15-25).

Elena Michalski (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) dished out 32 assists. She added seven digs in a losing effort.

Pack middle blockers hit well. Misha McDowell (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz.) spiked her way to five kills and hit .455. Melissa Nichols (Jr., McKinney, Texas) added four kills and hit .500. 

However, McDowell, Nichols, and the rest of the Pack did not block a single Ranger attack. Regis finished with 10 total blocks as they outhit the Pack .429 to .172.

CSU-Pueblo competed against their top-10 foe for the first set. The Rangers pulled ahead by three, 13-10. The ThunderWolves jumped in front twice, leading 16-15 and 17-16, but the Rangers rattled off a four-point run to take a 20-17 lead.  CSU-Pueblo tied the match at 20 and remained close but the Rangers scored three of the final four points to come away with the 25-23 set win.

Caitlin Broadwell (Sr., Lawrence, Kan.) knocked down six kills in the first set. She finished with nine kills and eight digs.

Set two started similarly to set one as the Pack kept pace with the Rangers.  Down 16-12, the Pack surrendered a 9-2 run as they Rangers claimed set two 25-14.

With the Pack trailing 6-5 early in set three, their upset hopes were dashed as the Rangers unleashed a 9-1 run. They took set three 25-15 to complete the sweep.

The ThunderWolves will try to get a big win Saturday when they face Chadron State College at 6 p.m.  CSU-Pueblo sits 1.5 games back of the Eagles in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
