JOHNSON, Kan. (September 2, 2016) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo cross country teams dominated the Border Classic, Friday to open the 2016 season on a high note. In addition to both the men's and women's teams winning the event, the ThunderWolves placed the top four runners on the men's side and three runners on the women's side.
The No. 18 men ran a team time of 1:17:53 after finishing one through four and seven through nine. West Texas A&M University was second with a time of 1:21:01.
Returning All-American Marcelo Laguera (So., Chihuahua, Mexico) won the 5K event with a time of 15:22.8, just ahead of the other returning Pack All-American, Derrick Williams (Jr., Columbia Falls, Mont.), who ran a 15:23.3. Freshman Paul Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) crossed the finish line at the same time as Williams in his first collegiate event, while junior Ben Vaughan (Great Falls, Mont.) finished fourth in 15:36.4.
The women's team ran a team time of 1:14:20, just ahead of host Fort Hays State University's 1:15:28.The Pack also won the event last year, running the 4K in 1:13:58.
The upperclassmen guided the ThunderWolves, as senior Bailey Hughes (Bigfork, Mont.) ran a 14:14.4 to capture the individual title. On the heels of Hughes was junior Miriam Roberts (Boulder, Colo.), as she crossed the finish line at 14:14.5. Senior Jordan Mathes (Boise, Idaho) ran a 14:17 to finish third. Running in her first collegiate race, Gillian Maness (Kalispell, Mont.) posted a 15:28 to finish eighth.
The ThunderWolves will run at the Colorado College Invite Sept. 10 at North Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs, Colo. The men's 8K race is scheduled to start at 8:45 a.m. The women's 6K race is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
