COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 5, 2016) - Senior Bailey Hughes (Bigfork, Mont.) of the No. 21 Colorado State University-Pueblo women's cross country team was honored as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Runner of the Week, in an announcement from the league office Wednesday.
The honor is the first of the season for Hughes and the third in her career after gathering the honor twice last cross country season. Derrick Williams (Jr., Columbia Falls, Mont.) of the men's squad was honored Sept. 21.
Hughes guided the ThunderWolves to a first-place finish in the Division II section of the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas Oct. 1. She ran a 17:31.6 5K, which was good for third in the division and 31st overall (494 runners). She had a 5:39.1 average mile.
At the Chile Pepper Festival, the women ran a team time of 1:29:30 to average 17:57 and post a score of 80, which was 10 points ahead of Southwest Baptist and 14 points ahead of No. 22 Colorado School of Mines. The Pack defeated 39 other non-Division I teams, while their team time was good for eighth overall (58 teams), ahead of 11 NCAA Division I programs.
The Pack will next run at the RMAC Championships, hosted by Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.
