INDIANAPOLIS (November 6, 2017) - The No. 14 Colorado State University-Pueblo men's cross country team has been selected to run at the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships, while senior Miriam Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) of the women's squad has earned a spot at the national meet.
The national championships are set for Nov. 18 in Evansville, Indiana at Angel Mounds. The University of Southern Indiana and the Evansville Sport Corporation will serve as the co-hosts of the championships. The women's race will begin at 9:15 a.m. Mountain time, followed by the men's race at 10:30 p.m. Mountain time.
A new format for selection to the championships was adopted this year, giving the top three teams at each of the eight region championships an automatic spot to the national meet with the final eight teams being selected as at-large participants. The ThunderWolves were fifth at the NCAA South Central Region Championships Saturday in Canyon, Texas and earned one of those at-large spots. A total of seven teams were selected from the south central region.
The appearance will be the second straight for the men's program and 13th in program history. Last year the team made its first NCAA Division II National Championships appearance and placed 9th, the program's third top 10 finish.
At this year's regional meet, the men totaled 188 points, just four behind host West Texas A&M. The team's total time in the 10K race was 2:41:13.76, an average of 32:14.76. Junior Marcelo Laguera (Chihuahua, Mexico) guided the ThunderWolves and posted a third-place finish with a time of 30:40.26. He will be eyeing a third All-American honor after two top 25 finishes.
Roberts ran the 6K regional race in 21:32.71 to finish fifth and automatically qualify for her third appearance at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The 6K time was a season best for the senior who qualified as an individual in 2015 and earned All-American recognition (finished 17th) at last year's championships when the team qualified.
USTFCCCA ALL-REGION SELECTION
Four members of the ThunderWolves earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region honors after finishing in the top 25 of the 2017 NCAA Division II South Central Region Championships in Canyon, Texas Saturday.
In addition to Laguera, sophomore Paul Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) was honored after he finished the race in 11th with a time of 31:18.68.
Sophomore Gillian Maness (Kalispell, Mont.) joined M. Roberts on the all-region team, as she posted a time of 21:57.52 to finish 19th.
